It’s the middle of winter, Softball season is over, its not back for a few months. However for the elite players amongst us, the biggest tournaments of the year are just a few days away!

The Golden Homes Black Sox are in Canada about to compete in the world champs in Whitehorse in Canada’s Yukon. The Black sox are looking to wipe the memories of last years 10-5 loss to Canada in the final and get their 7th world championship gold, the most by any nation.

They have just finished competing in the Bob Law memorial tournament in preparation for the world champs. Canada again got the better of them in the semifinal taking down the Black Sox 10-3. The last time the Black Sox played was at the Challenge cup in Auckland where they took out Argentina 9-0 in the final!

Black Sox veteran Brad Rona is back in the team for his 6th world championship after missing out on the last few Black Sox tours. Brad had a strong club nationals this year where he won the top batter award. Brad also won the tournament MVP award in his last International Softball Congress tournament in 2016. Coach Mark Sorenson says, “we could see him coming off the bench in a key situation and doing the job for us”.
Later this month the Junior White Sox are competing in the World Champs in Clearwater, Florida. The last world champs were in 2015 where the Junior White Sox came in 6th place. Right now, the Junior White sox are in Orlando to prepare for the tournament and get used to the heat which is an average of 32 degrees at this time of year, something the Junior white sox have had experience with in the past

In 2016 the Junior White Sox went to Hawaii for the Hawaii invitational where they had a real eye opening experience against the best of the softball world and only took 1 win away from the tournament. A huge plus from that tournament was the inclusion of outfielder Kelly Renner who has dual citizenship with New Zealand and the USA. Renner will be playing for New Zealand this month in Florida, she will be a key piece of the puzzle.

They will be looking to improve the 6th placing this year part of that falls on new captain Pallas Potter, at only 16 years of age, this is her 2nd world champs as she was at the last tournament in Oklahoma. Head coach Venita Hokai said “Potter has been outstanding at this year’s Age Group Nationals blasting at least 5 home runs out of the park.  Pallas is a quiet achiever and really has matured as a player since her last outing at the World Championships in Oklahoma, 2015.  We have no doubt she has the leadership skills every team is looking for in a captain”
